Chris Kallmyer

MRO is proud to welcome Chris Kallmyer, sound performer and artist, as he brings his installation piece This Distance Makes Us Feel Closer to the Observatory site. Enjoy art, sit and watch the sunset, and star gaze with our knowledgeable starguides.

This distance makes us feel closer is an immersive, mountaintop sound work at the Magdalena Ridge Observatory. A central group of listeners will gather at dusk, sip hot tea, and experience spacious and faraway tones resounding across the landscape; morse code derived from local oral histories and astronomical data gathered by the observatory. This special performance is naturally inclusive, inviting listeners to hang out and notice sounds, sights, smells, greater landscape that stretches out from our perch in the high-desert.” -Chris Kallmyer

This Distances Makes Us Feel Closer is part of High Desert Test Sites, a journey from art exhibit to art exhibit from Joshua Tree, California all the way to Magdalena, New Mexico! To learn more about other exhibits at HDTS, visit their Projects Page.

EVENT DATE: Friday October 18th, 2013. 6pm-midnight

What do I need to know?

This event is open to the public. Guests must arrange their own transportation to the ridge. 4-wheel drive is recommended for the road from Water Canyon to MRO.

The event will be held on the Magdalena Ridge an hour southwest of Socorro, NM (directions).

Visitors should arrive at Water Canyon at the base of the Magdalena ridge between 4pm and 5pm. Please anticipate a 45 minute drive from Water Canyon to the Observatory.

Road Warning
The road to Magdalena Ridge Observatory climbs 4,000 feet in only 8 miles, making it very steep. It is largely single-track with little room for passing for the majority of its length. To let oncoming vehicles pass, it may be necessary to reverse to a turnout. The road is unsurfaced and experiences several hairpin bends.
Care should be taken when driving to and from the Observatory to drive slowly and carefully and use low gears, especially when descending, to avoid riding the brakes and causing brake failure. As long as drivers are sober, cautious, and alert we will all enjoy accident-free visits to the site.
Please take care to fill up on gas before driving to MRO. There are no gas stations closer than Socorro or Magdalena.
